This instructional and informative DVD raises awareness about the importance of home language maintenance and provides useful tips for educators and parents on how to support bilingualism during early childhood. It includes interviews and case studies with early childhood professionals, educators and parents of bilingual children. The Cultural Treasure Chest DVD examines the various ways in which early childhood education and care services can work with their CALD families to create an environment that is genuinely inclusive of a multicultural perspective. It is broken into several chapters that look at different aspects of inclusion such as multicultural programming, working with refugee children and supporting bilingualism. The DVD comes with a booklet containing questions linked to each chapter. In addition to serving as an educational resource for parents and educators, it also doubles as an excellent professional development tool that can be used in staff meetings and professional development workshops.

The booklet covers 68 languages and includes words and phrases specific to early childhood education and care. Survival words are an essential tool in facilitating basic communication and relationship building between staff and bilingual families.

The book details the refugee journey from the perspective of a child. It is designed to help early childhood educators better understand what refugee children experience before arriving in their care. It also contains information on what other resources and support services are available to facilitate working with refugee children and families. Developed in NSW Mid North Coast, this book contains some information specific to this region. However the majority of its content is applicable to all of NSW.
