Fostering Belonging and Independence

ECSC Multicultural Disability Services

Since its inception in 1979, the Ethnic Community Services Cooperative (ECSC) has been a beacon of support and inclusion for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. For over four decades, ECSC has tirelessly worked to create a society where everyone, regardless of their ethnicity or abilities, feels valued and supported. Central to this mission is the Multicultural Disability Services (MDS) program, which offers social events and outings tailored to the unique needs of its participants.

A Sense of Belonging and Continuity

One of the most remarkable aspects of ECSC's Multicultural Disability Services program is the enduring sense of belonging it fosters among its participants. Many individuals have been utilising ECSC's services for more than two decades, finding not just support but a genuine sense of community within the organisation. Testimonials from participants like Natalie Dang and Ngoc-Anh Nguyen echo this sentiment, highlighting fond memories and the joy of connecting with others.

Supporting Progress and Independence

For families with loved ones participating in ECSC's MDS programs, witnessing their progress and newfound skills is a source of immense pride. As one parent, Tommy Ng's mum, attests, the dedication and care provided by ECSC's support workers, like Lily, have made a significant impact on their lives. Through engaging activities and individualised support, ECSC empowers participants to develop independence and thrive within their communities.

A Fulfilling Experience for All

Support workers, such as Larisa Nguyen and Hong Dao, play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of ECSC's programs. Larisa Nguyen's words reflect the deep sense of fulfillment derived from connecting with participants on both an individual and group level. Meanwhile, Hong Dao emphasises the importance of respect, dignity, and effective communication in delivering personalised support to each participant.

From exploring the city's Chinese Garden to enjoying sports, movies, and coffee outings, ECSC's social events offer a diverse array of experiences for participants to enjoy. These activities not only enrich their lives but also promote social inclusion and community engagement.

As ECSC celebrates over 40 years of service, its Multicultural Disability Services program stands as a testament to the power of inclusivity and support. Through fostering a sense of belonging, promoting independence, and creating meaningful experiences, ECSC continues to make a profound difference in the lives of individuals living with disabilities from multicultural backgrounds. With dedicated support workers and a commitment to diversity, ECSC remains a vital lifeline for those seeking connection, empowerment, and inclusion.
