Multicultural Aged Care Services

ECSC is a certified service provider in specialised care to diverse groups. We provide culturally appropriate services for multicultural seniors, including social support, respite services whilst also supporting the aged care sector to be more inclusive.

Social Support Services

We provide social support services for seniors over 65 from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background who need some help to stay at home and maintain their independence and wellbeing.

Our Sector Support and Development Program in Eastern Sydney and Inner West areas support CHSP service providers through the aged care reforms, in preparation for a new in-home aged care system.

1:1 Support

We provide individual 1:1 support to frail older persons living at home utilising our bilingual/bicultural workforce to ensure culturally and linguistically appropriate care and support. Some of the ways we can help: we can visit older persons at home or ring them for a chat, we can take short walks with them, we can take them out for a cup of tea or coffee, we can provide them with information that they might need or connect them to someone who can help, we can accompany them to the shops, a doctor’s appointment etc.

Group support

We provide group support and activities through our Social Support Groups. You may wish to join our Multicultural Support Group or one of our many language-specific Support Groups: Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Vietnamese. Some of the group activities we can offer include: “Knitting with love group and Online Friendship group“, gentle exercise, yoga, falls prevention, meditation, cultural events and celebration, music, dance and singing, computer classes – including help with smartphones and tablets, excursions to different locations across Sydney and NSW, information sessions about areas of interest to older people.

Care Relationships and Carer Support Program

We provide good quality respite care for elderly people so that their carers can take a much-needed break. We organise a trained bilingual/bicultural worker to look after the client through providing supervision and assistance so that their carers will have a break from their usual caring duties.

Flexible Respite

1:1 structured activities to give clients the social experience to develop, maintain or support independent living and social interaction and offer respite to their carer. Daytime support service for carers of clients needing assisted support in the carer’s or client’s home.

Centre-Based Respite

Structured group activities to clients to develop, maintain or support independent living and social interaction conducted in a community setting and small group day outings to give clients a social experience and offer respite to their carers

HOW IT WORKS - STEP-BY-STEP

If you or someone that you know wants to receive Social Support (individual and/or group) services or Care Relationships and Carer Support (Flexible and/or Centre-Based Respite) services from us, follow these simple steps:

Step 1

Contact the My Aged Care (MAC) on 1800 200 422 to find out about services that will assist you to continue to live independently at home.

Step 2

You can discuss your needs with MAC intake officer and find out if you require an assessment. If you do, an assessor will come to your home for a face-to-face assessment to work out what services you are eligible for. Once the assessment is completed let My Aged Care know about your preference for Multicultural Aged Care Services provided by Ethnic Community Services Co-operative.

Step 3

If you speak a language other than English, please inform MAC about the language you speak, and an interpreter will be organised for you. You can phone TIS (Translating and Interpreting Services) on 131 450 and ask them to contact My Aged Care.

Step 4

Let our team know so they can start arranging services for you as soon as possible.

Our specialised Multicultural Sector Support and Development Officers (SSDO) also support a range of activities to support, develop and strengthen the home support service system through the Multicultural Access Project under the CHSP or Commonwealth Home Support Program.

Our SSDOs are available for specilaist advice and support on strengthening access and inclusion of CALD older persons to CHSP services in Sydney’s Inner West and South Eastern Sydney regions: including strategies and solutions for improving the inclusivity of service delivery, resource development, simple translations, outreaching CALD communities, training and 1:1 support over the phone, through emails or in-person.

With the changes to the CHSP system and the introduction of the new In-Home Aged Care Program, our specialised Multicultural SSDO’s are available to support CHSP services to transition to the new system including applying for the Specialization Verification Framework under the new system.
