Ability Links Coaching Newsletter

Hello Linkers!

Welcome to the first instalment of the ECSC Coaching newsletter. This newsletter has been created for you so that you can be kept up to date with any news, events or workshops we are running . We will also be using this newsletter as a way to share tips and success stories from other linkers who have been working with children and young people in the CALD space.

In this newsletter we will be chatting about how coaching can support your practice when working with Children and Young people from a CALD background. We would love to make this newsletter as interactive as possible so please let us know if there is anything you want us to cover!

COACHING: WHAT TO EXPECT

Many of you have not worked alongside a coach. We know you probably have lots of questions. Hopefully we can answer these questions and clear up any confusion!

What is coaching?

Coaching provides you with the space to share your challenges and successes. It is a a time where you can reflect on your practice and identify any goals you want to achieve. Coaching looks at your strengths and what you can do to work more effectively with clients. If you are feeling stuck, coaching can support you to problem solve and move forward. No matter how experienced you are, you can benefit from having a coach because it will help you see your work from a different perspective. When we are feeling busy and overwhelmed coaching can actually help you to gain clarity and focus – so don’t let being busy stop you from utilising this service.

How is coaching different from supervision?

There are many similarities between coaching and supervision however it is important to be aware of how these things differ. As coaches, our role is not to tell you what you need to do or even how you should do it. A coach’s role is to ask powerful questions to help you discover the path for yourself. A coach doesn’t decide the goals ahead of time, a coach set’s aside their goals and allows you to develop your own goals. We are here to help you tap into resources and we can share information especially in relation to young people with a disability from CALD backgrounds.

How might my coach be able to support me in relation to my work with young people with a disability from a CALD background?

As you have seen in our videos, we have all worked in the realm the disability/ young people/ CALD space in various ways. We are able to share insights and knowledge that we have accumulated across our own professional careers. Although each coach has a different set of skills, be assured that you can tap into the supports and skills of all three coaches via the coach in your area. Sometimes we might not have the answer you are seeking, but we will endeavour to look at how we can support you to seek the information you need.
